About ORM Calc

ORM Calc was born out of frustration with the current state of fitness software. We set out to build a suite of strength calculators that prioritized mathematical accuracy, user privacy, and raw speed.

Our Engineering Philosophy

The fitness app market is saturated with tools that require monthly subscriptions, harvest user data, and use flawed algorithms. We decided to build a "local-first" tool—a piece of software that runs entirely in your browser.

By eliminating the backend server, we achieved three things:

  1. Unmatched Privacy: Your data never leaves your device.
  2. Incredible Speed: The calculators run instantaneously without waiting for a server response.
  3. Zero Cost: Without server costs, we can offer 35 professional-grade tools entirely for free.

Why Our Plate Calculator is Different

Most online plate calculators use a "greedy" algorithm. This means they grab the heaviest plate, then the next heaviest, and stop when they run out of room. The flaw? If your target weight is 100kg, a greedy calculator might tell you to load 102.5kg because it rounded *up* to the nearest available plates.

ORM Calc uses Dynamic Programming. This is a mathematical optimization method that evaluates thousands of plate combinations in milliseconds to find the exact closest achievable weight without ever exceeding your target. It's the same kind of algorithmic logic used in professional logistics and routing software.

The 1RM Formulas We Use

There is no single "perfect" formula for estimating a One-Rep Max. Different formulas were tested on different populations (novices, advanced lifters, powerlifters). Instead of forcing you to guess, our 1RM calculator runs all seven major published formulas simultaneously:

We display the consensus and median of all seven, providing a much more robust estimate than relying on just one.

About the Team

ORM Calc is developed and maintained by a small team of software engineers and passionate strength athletes. We are not a large media corporation. We are lifters who understand the frustration of a bad piece of software. The tool is continuously updated based on feedback from the powerlifting and weightlifting community.

How We Are Funded

This tool is completely free to use. There are no premium tiers, no paywalls, and no mandatory accounts. If we utilize affiliate links in our educational articles (like recommending a specific lifting belt), it is clearly disclosed in our Affiliate Disclosure.
