Strength Training Glossary

From RPE to Wilks, understand the terminology used in the gym and on the competition platform.

1RM (One-Rep Max)

The maximum amount of weight a lifter can lift for a single repetition with good form. See our 1RM Calculator.

DOTS

A modern powerlifting scoring system used to compare lifters of different bodyweights. See our DOTS vs IPF GL guide.

IPF GL Points

The official scoring system of the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), replacing Wilks in 2020.

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)

A scale from 1 to 10 used to measure how hard a set felt. RPE 10 means no reps left in the tank (0 RIR).

RIR (Reps in Reserve)

The number of reps you could have done before failure. RPE 9 = 1 RIR.

Training Max (TM)

A percentage (usually 85–90%) of your true 1RM used to calculate working sets in programs like 5/3/1. See our Training Max Calculator.

Wilks Score

An older mathematical formula used to compare powerlifters across weight classes. Replaced by IPF GL in the IPF, but still used by some federations. See our Wilks Guide.
